There's a shitload of difference there. I doubt that it's ANets intention that everyone should instantly afford the best weapons and prettiest armor in the PvE game.

I spent yesterday in Lions Arch, selling a dozen or so gold, purple, or white, max damage weapons and shields _but they were clean or didn't have max enchantments_. The most I got for ANY of them was 1500 gold, for a max-armor Defender shield with requirement 6 strength and a Pommel of Fortitude +21 health. Most of the rest sold for 400 gold each.

Ordinary adventuring will give you plenty of cash to buy GOOD stuff. But if you absolutely MUST have a perfect chaos axe and fissure of woe armor, well, then I guess you'll just have to suffer.

Then don't waste your time trading. Break down the items with an expert salavge and sell the materials or keep them to save you buying them for armour. I regulary get 1-3 steel ingots out of plain weapons. Steel sells for 300gp. Besides items aren't important. They are a side issue in a game based on skills.
